Region 2 «Fall Meeting
August 24 — 26, 2007
Wyndham Hotel
San Jose CA
Let me go back a moment to the Spring 2006 Region 2 Meeting held in Dublin, California. Howard Smith, former DPMA member and Past President and his wife, Dorothy, Past Region 2 President
and current Region 2 member attended the Friday evening dinner and asked, «If we held a DPMA Reunion in San Jose, California, do you think anyone would come?»
«We said, Sure!» Now, we had planned to have a Leadership presentation as a part of the dinner, but as you might expect, when Howard Smith is at dinner,
Howard IS the dinner! The next morning, which came all too soon, the Region 2 board voted to hold the Fall Region 2 Meeting in conjunction with the DPMA Reunion
to be held in San Jose, California. Remember, in California «Fall» is when we say it is.
But before the Fall meeting in San Jose came the Fall 2006 meeting in Portland, Oregon and I’m having second thoughts about all this. Remember, when I was a DPMA
member, I was active only at the chapter level, not Region, not National. I don’t know all these people, I thought. We started to think about scheduling problems
and some wanted me to assure that I wouldn’t let the business meeting run into the Reunion Banquet and I’m thinking, but we have a certain amount of business to take
care of, like election of officers and IÕm thinking we have to get ’er done!
I worried about things like having «Old Timers» sitting in on the business meeting wanting to tell us how things should be done, Members from Region 1 and 4
(also Western District), Region 18, National Officers including Mark Gilfand, Immediate Past Association President, 2 District Directors and a couple of people
interested in the vacancy at Western District Director.
As it turned out, everything went pretty smoothly, the guests had good things to say, Mark Gilfand contributed a lot, we had time for Leadership topics and we had
elections:
Region President: Diana Shelton
1st Vice President: Sam Luke
2nd Vice President: Bruce Hinson
Secretary: Mark Mathis
Treasurer: Gladys Norman
The Spring 2008 Region 2 Meeting will be hosted by Central Idaho in Boise 4/24/08 — 4/26/2008.
We’re talking about the Fall 2008 meeting being in Honolulu, the Spring 2009 meeting in Seattle and the Fall 2009 meeting in Anchorage.
I’ll let Howard tell you more about the reunion events. I give him congratulations for being a fine host! Do we want another DPMA Reunion?

To Region 2:
It is election time for AITP. Although both Bruce Hinson and I were on the Western District Nominating Committee and Sam Luke is the AITP Nominations Chair and therefore may not campaign for candidates, we can and do urge you to vote. Even where a candidate is running unopposed, your vote is important in that it shows your support and gives credibility to that candidate. You will find information about the candidates on the Portal, http://www.aitp.org. You may vote, beginning August 1, 2006 and ending August 21, 2006 at http://www.aitp.org/vote.
Your vote is important. Please vote.

Discussing disbanding the chapter.
- Evergreen Dave Chapin’s received via email report read by Gladys:
The Evergreen Chapter is in "suspended animation" mode—
In the mid 1990’s we lost the meeting facilities we had been using for decades. We then went through the attendance reducing string of temporary
locations while searching for a new "permanent" home. After that experience, we announced that the biggest threat to the continued existence
of an AITP chapter is not the price of renewals, not the lack of a professional journal, or even the lack of programs meaningful to the membership emanating
from the Association and Region. The biggest threat to the continued existence of a chapter is the dwindling supply of available meeting facilities.
We again are in search of a facility which can offer enough isolation that the background noise doesn’t compete with the speaker and other guests
aren’t “treated” to a discussion of “technology used in the investigation of complex accident scenes” to the detriment of the
enjoyment of their dinner. We are searching for a facility which can supply a meal that does not generate a discussion of the “mystery meat”
more memorable than the speaker; and a facility which can “go with the flow” on head count variances as not all good AITP members consider
an “I’ll be there” as much of a binding commitment as does the chef—
This is the sixth “home” we’ve lost since that eviction in the mid 90’s and this one may turn out to be fatal. Each time we are set adrift,
we come out of it with viewer active members— the new place is just “too far away” or “too expensive,” or it’s “too hard to
find a parking place—” If we’re lucky and we’ve say eight or nine months before the member’s renewal bill comes out, we might lure
him/her back with the quality of the speakers and program topics we routinely feature, but if that deadline is near, it’s usually another “ding.”
We haven’t given up—
Chris Glanister of the Puget Sound Chapter asked if they were to move their meeting location northward, would we be interested in holding joint meetings
until we find a new location. Our BoD immediately agreed to the plan and to moving our meeting night to sync with that of the Puget Sound Chapter.
We have produced a membership recruitment brochure (http://cis.acs.edcc.edu/Aitp/EvergreenChapter/Files/Membership_Recruting_Brochure.pdf)
and have been distributing same through our chapter members and those of the Puget Sound Chapter.
We continue to make preliminary contact with potential speakers.
